"Without continual growth and progress, such words as
improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning."
-- Benjamin Franklin

Professional Development

As an individual, I continually strive to develop my skills and knowledge. I actively seek out events, workshops, conferences and speaker series to continue to challenge my perspective, to learn new things, and to gain a broader understanding of the world. This includes learning best practices and approaches to sustainability and social equity practiced throughout the world.

Toggle through some of the events, conferences and workshops I attended. Know that I am committed to continual growth, progress and improvement!

Sustainergies CUP
Took part in international sustainability competition. Participated in two sustainability challenges regarding sustainable banking and sustainable cities presented by Sparbanerkna and Siemens. Worked among a team to develop innovative and practical sustainable solutions. Both proposals were among the five finalists selected for both competitions, a competition first. Presented ideas to distinguished jury and corporate executives and awarded first prize for one sustainable solution; second prize for other sustainable solution.
Inclusive Business Forum
On a cold February day, I ventured to Stockholm to take part in a forum held jointly by the nonprofit Inclusive Business Forum and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). The event focused on the role of business in empowering those living in less developed countries. Furthermore, we discussed the benefits of business engagement in CSR campaigns that fill a need in less developed countries.
Umeå Sustainable Development - Study Visits
As a part of the Network for Future Global Leaders in Sweden, I was selected to take part in study visits in Umeå, Sweden. The three-day course included technical lectures pertaining to sustainable construction, waste water treatment, extended producer responsibility / recycling, and environmental policy. Moreover, we had the opportunity to experience sustainable city solutions including a garbage incineration plant, sustainable apartment and business complexes, recycling facilities, etc.
Nobel Week Dialogue: The Future of Energy
In conjunction with the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm, the Nobel Week Dialogue brings past Nobel winners, stakeholders, students, and the community to discuss a relevant world topic. This year focused on the future of energy. Among the speakers that made an impact on me: Anna-Karin Hatt (Swedish Minister of IT and Energy) discussing change through political action; Fatih Birol (Director of Global Energy Economics at the International Energy Agency) describing the role of subsidies in the energy market; Hans Vestberg (President & CEO of Ericsson Group) demonstrating the role Information and Communication Technology plays in the "Networked Society."
Innovation in Mind
This two day conference inspired all to think innovatively, challenge one's perspective, and work across disciplines to tackle some of the world's biggest challenges. I was among the dedicated team providing content via the online platform by interviewing participants, attending and reporting on all events, taking pictures, etc. The conference included numerous distinguished speakers along with breakout sessions discussing new opportunities in addressing global challenges. Check out my blog post about the event.
World Water Week
The theme if this year's professional conference was "Water Cooperation: Building Partnerships." I had the opportunity to attend the entirety of the conference and earn about the various roles government, business, and NGOs play in water management in more and less developed countries. Moreover, holding true to the theme, I interacted with many brilliant people and had discussions that enhanced my understanding of water management with regards to sustainable development.
C2C Fellowship Program
The Campus to Congress | Corporation | Community Leadership Program is organized in collaboration with BARD Center for Environmental Policy. The program is held for selected participants throughout the country and focuses on developing skills for tomorrows leaders within the three areas of political action, business administration, and community development. The experience continues as we engage with fellow participants throughout the country, share ideas and perspectives, and further develop our skills.
Forward on CLimate Rally in Washington, DC
As an active member in 350.org's campaign in Milwaukee, WI, myself and other volunteers partook in the largest climate rally in US history in opposition to the Keystone XL Pipeline. Upon arriving in Washington, DC via bus, I listened to the rally held for participants, engaged in a peaceful march, and experienced one of many ways to bring political change within the environmental field.
The 92nd American Meteorological Society (AMS) Conference
The annual meeting of the AMS provided me with many insights to other avenues I could take my training in meteorology. Having just graduated, I attended discussions and networked with many in the field that are employing their knowledge of weather and climate and engaging in international development, water management, and sustainable development.
